Top 5 Things to Avoid in a Job Search
- On November 2, 2014
A good article on what not to do:
- Apply online. Except for people with the golden resume (top 20 law school, AmLaw training, transactional skills, prior in-house, and in the 4-9 year range), don’t expect a response for online submissions.
- Apply for jobs that do not match your skills. Employers are looking for immediate help, not someone to train.
- Say “I’m a fast learner.” Show you have the underlying skills and can transition easily.
- Ask strangers to pass on your resume. You need to build rapport (and ideally offer something of value) before you ask a favor like submitting your resume for you. Also, people who know your work and personality are the best spokespeople for you, not strangers.
- Check in too often. By all means, follow up with HR, your recruiter, or prospective manager, but do it judiciously.
