Avoid these top 5 interviewing mistakes!
- Insufficient preparation. To do well, you need to know about the role, company, and interviewer. Demonstrate this knowledge throughout the interview. Clearly articulate how you can do the job and make their lives easier.
- Low energy. You must project energy and enthusiasm. Have eye contact and smile often. Yes, this feels artificial, but everyone is doing it. If you aren’t, you will stick out (and not in a good way).
- Low interest. Ask informed questions throughout and especially when they ask, “Do you have any questions?” Even in the lucky event you have the perfect resume and background, you still must say you are interested and why. Now is not the time to play hard to get. Companies sometimes do not want to spend the time wooing someone when they have other good candidates ready to go. Make clear the transition to this job will be seamless and quick!
- Bad delivery. In addition to showing up on time and dressing appropriately, you need present yourself in a way that’s easy to hear and remember. Stay on message, keep answers short and to the point (ideally 2-3 points in any answer), and give relevant examples for the job.
- Failure to anticipate. If you look at your resume and career trajectory objectively, you will see there will be obvious questions, whether negative (explaining holes or job changes) or positive (if things are going so great, why do you want to come here). Practice these answers. Make sure they are compelling and complete the narrative arc.
- Remember: you need to tailor your presentation to the job and interviewer so that all roads lead to this employer.
