The “Great Resignation” Is Over. What Does That Mean?
- On July 16, 2023
The NYT reported the Great Resignation is over — the rate workers quit their jobs has fallen almost to pre-pandemic levels. Will workers keep gains made (flexibility on in-office, high pay, etc.), or will employers regain leverage (especially as the economy remains unstable)? NYT thinks the “pendulum may be swinging back toward employers,” and I agree. Raises and signing bonuses are rarer these days, and lawyers are not being wooed to new opportunities like they were.
When I’m asked how the market is doing, I say it’s not doing well. But I’ve seen worse with the ‘08-‘09 financial crisis and dot bomb.
Hopefully the tech and life sciences space will turn around 2024. Per the WSJ, economists are now predicting slightly lower odds of recession in the next 12 months (compared to 6 months ago) due to “easing inflation, a still-strong labor market and economic resilience.”
