New CA Law Prohibits Employers from Asking Prior Salary (Effective 1/18)
- On October 19, 2017
Job seekers, starting January 2018, prospective employers in California cannot ask for your salary history! And if you ask, they have to tell you the pay range for their opening. Read AB168 or a summary. The purpose of the law is to fight pay disparity so that compensation for a new job will not be based on the old job. This law will have a big practical effect on how business is conducted, e.g., most employers now ask for salary history as part of the application process, and many will not issue an offer without learning what the applicant last made.
