Job Search and Interview Tips to Follow from Former Lawyer Turned Career Coach
- On April 21, 2024
I listened on NPR to job search tips from Cynthia Pong, a career coach, and agreed with what she said! She used to practice law, so the advice she gives everyone definitely works for lawyers. The podcast is 19 minutes long and worth listening to, but if you are short on time, these are the points that resonated most with me:
- Have the right attitude and appropriate presentation style. When candidates talk to me, I can tell if they already feel beaten down, and it makes for a poor showing. Lots of things in your job search are outside of your control (what the economy is doing, where you worked already, etc.), but how you present yourself is 100% within your control, so do a good job here! Show composure while interviewing so don’t start the process until you are emotionally ready. Do not be obsequious or its opposite, projecting overconfidence. Put thought into your presentation, and make it a straightforward analysis for the interviewer and yourself if you are a good match.
- Don’t blast your resume everywhere. Instead, target jobs that make sense and target people to introduce you to them. Studies have shown the majority of people land jobs through referrals, which makes sense since someone on the inside asked you to apply or got you a look.
- How to get referred? Cynthia suggests spending 70-80% of your job search on networking. If you reach out to 20 people, expect 8 to 10 responses, and out of those 8 to 10, expect 2 to 4 coffee chats. Shoot for a few coffee meetings a week. These numbers sound right to me.
