Disastrous February California Bar Offering by the Numbers:
- Test takers of the newly designed California bar exam faced a myriad of problems. Many users were unable to log in, disconnected and/or locked out of the testing platform, and unable to copy and paste. Others reported getting blank exam questions or the same question twice, being unable to upload answers, and/or getting the notice they failed after upload.
- The situation was so bad the California Bar offered a retake initially scheduled for March 3-4 and now postponed to March 18-19, but at this point, twelve California law school deans have requested the March retake be blocked and for a full review.
- Even before the test, the Bar knew the rollout was going poorly and offered registrants the option to withdraw and get a full refund. Those who proceeded and failed could retake it for free in July. Of 5,600 registrants, 964 withdrew by Feb. 26, the first day of the exam.
- One purpose of this newly designed test was to save $3.8M, but the exam is already facing cost overruns.
- Exam questions have been leaked online, and forensics experts hired to figure out who did it.
