Decoding Interview Questions
- On October 15, 2023
Here’s a decoder for what the interviewers are actually thinking when they ask these questions or make these comments:
- “Tell me about yourself.” Why do they ask this when they have your resume in front of them? They are checking that you can summarize succinctly, have done relevant work, and are easy to work with. They are also assessing how you communicate and how personable you are. Do you sound like a robot, or are you engaging? That’s important because they have to work with you and because they want clients to come to you.
- “We are very early in our search.” If they say this at the end of the interview, it’s generally not a good sign. They may be trying to let you down easy. But if they next say someone will be in touch to schedule the following round, then it’s ok!
- “Here’s how our department is laid out, what we do, and how it impacts the company.” When the hiring manager goes into detail and is in sell mode, it’s a good sign.
- “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” They want to know you aren’t a job hopper, that you aren’t gunning for THEIR job, and that this job lines up with your interests.
- “We’ll be in touch” but then they don’t follow up! Why would they say that and not follow through? Usually they aren’t trying to deceive you. The top reasons for this behavior: you are a contender but they like someone better who is going through the process; they can’t get consensus on you internally; or filling the job is de-prioritized.
