Can I get a job applying online? (How important is networking really?)
- On August 1, 2016
Applying online for a job is easy and painless, compared to the time-consuming (and vague) process of networking.
However, the New York Times career column The Workologist agrees with my advice of targeting and pursuing specific companies/positions, instead of merely applying online. Some key takeaways:
- If you apply online, find someone at the company to get your resume in front of the right person.
- Network in person, which should be kept up, even at a low level, because “today’s casual acquaintance could be tomorrow’ s crucial link to a new and better gig.”
- The numbers. What percentage of openings are filled through referrals? Some say as high as 70%, but that number is “only a guess.” A recent and concrete study puts it at 30-50%. While it’s not impossible to get a job by applying online, your odds substantially increase when you are recommended for the job.
