Are Boring Formats OK for Legal Resumes?
- On August 25, 2024
Lawyers often ask me about updating their resumes to industry standard. What does that entail? Simple is ok; I’m backed up by recruiters from top companies like Nvidia on what to do.
- I agree you should do these basics: use the language from the job description, impactful verbs, and metrics to quantify accomplishment.
- Should you do more to stand out? Actually, no. Don’t even “consider accent colors like green or purple” because then “you’re just being a little gimmicky.” Instead, “make it boring,” i.e., “no colors, no charts, no graphs, no pictures.”
- I love this point: “Nobody really wants a creative accountant”(or lawyer)! Only consider using nonstandard fonts or sizes (beyond Times New Roman and 11 point black font on white/cream resume) if you are from a creative field. While job descriptions for in-house counsel often ask for lawyers who think out of the box, I know from experience that employers do not want to see creative resumes.
