Required Prep for Interviews: 5 Things to Do + Extra Credit
- On February 18, 2024
The right preparation for an interview is important. You need to know what the company expects from lawyers so you can highlight work it cares about. And with sufficient prep, you can go in feeling comfortable, which is essential to project competence and confidence. Here’s how to prep:
- Review the website, especially the About page (for its description and if it has numbers at a glance, e.g., size, geography, key markets, etc.) and News page (I would skim recent press releases).
- If the company is public, review its annual report, in particular the general corporate information section (especially its competitors), risk factors, and financial highlights. If the company is private, start with TechCrunch.
- Look at the LinkedIn profiles of the legal team. You will likely spot some trends, like they all went to similar types of schools or firms. Understand their biases and perspectives to anticipate questions.
- Talk to someone at the company to learn its values, strategy, and keywords. If you don’t know anyone at the company, talk to a competitor in the industry so you know the issues faced.
- Research company programs and filings that relate to the job, e.g., SEC filings for a corporate/securities job, patents for an IP job, etc. Use the product or service if the company is consumer-facing.
Extra credit: Listen to interviews or podcasts by executives and/or their earnings call (or at least skim the transcript). Check out crowd-sourced content (with a grain of salt) like Wikipedia and Seeking Alpha.
