Hidden Market for Top Jobs: Do They Exist?
- On November 12, 2022
The WSJ recently reported on the existence of a hidden market for top jobs, which are not publicly advertised. Is this true? Yes, this certainly happens in the in-house market! So how do you land one of these plum jobs? Let’s go through the article’s advice.
- Why are these jobs unpublished? WSJ writes: “Some are management roles that are currently occupied by people whom senior leaders want to push out, but not before discreetly finding replacements.” Yes. Another reason for unlisted positions is they “may be at venture-backed startups or relate to new corporate initiatives that, for competitive reasons, companies don’t want to advertise in view of rivals.” Also yes.
- Who gets asked to refer people for these jobs? The article lists executives, professional networks, and recruiters. I’ll add top law firms, investors, and board members too. Get to know these king makers in the legal field.
- How can you get considered for these roles? Get visible to the people making referrals (see #2). WSJ suggests: “Make a point to introduce yourself to people who work at companies that interest you. Connect with recruiters in your field, even when you’re not actively looking for a new job. Go to conferences. Speak on panels (yes, the ones that feel like unpaid, extra work). Freshen up that headshot.” I agree on all those points.
- How do you work with a recruiter? The article suggests “build[ing] rapport with a headhunter” who is in the know: “Be direct—no vague requests to ‘pick your brain,’ please—and don’t bother with an invitation to coffee or lunch. Send an updated resume and say what you’re interested in… Talk about compensation, location and specific career goals. Lunch and things like that? Sad to say, but no one has time for that stuff.” Yes to all of that. Be charming and helpful to your recruiter because we are asked what we think of folks. You do not want us to say you were hard to work with or lack judgment.
