3 Simple Signals You Are Good at Your Job
- On July 17, 2022
As a legal recruiter, I talk to thousands of people about their careers. The obvious things that make them stand out: top-notch credentials, strong work performance, and a clear career trajectory (what they’ve done makes sense and connects with what they want to do).
And here are three less obvious things candidates can do that also impress me (it’s a “homerun!” if the person does all three!):
- Ask insightful questions. I like when candidates have done basic homework and aren’t asking what can be easily found on the Internet. And whenever people ask how they can help me, I am impressed! I rarely take folks up on their offer, though. Instead I see it as a signal they are aware of more than themselves, which is crucial to being a lawyer. Not only do you need to know your subject area but also how to work with others.
- Communicate well. The test for me is whether you can explain what you have to offer and what you’re looking for in 90 seconds or less and in an interesting way.
- Come recommended. If people I trust tell me to talk to you, it means you have legal expertise, social skills, and a reliable track record.
