Is Your Boss Gaslighting You? (and Do They Know It’s the Great Resignation?)
- On January 30, 2022
It’s the Great Resignation, but I’m not sure companies know how much of a flight risk their workers are. Here are some common phrases called out by well-regarded exec Amanda Natividad in her Twitter thread on “BS things your boss has said – decoded” that should get you thinking about your future … elsewhere!
- “We need fresh blood!” means “They’re not going to hire or promote within for a specific role. 50/50 chance they hire their friend. Or maybe contract a consultant… who is also their friend.” I agree the phrase means they are importing talent and not promoting from within.
- “We needed someone more senior…” Yes, I also think “there’s nothing you can do.” Sure you can point out your wins and how you speak truth to power, but obviously your manager doesn’t think so. I agree “If you love your job despite this, ask for specific feedback” and “job hunt” too.
- “They’re not a culture fit.” The exec points out “[u]nless there’s an obvious red flag about someone, this is most likely discrimination. If this bothers you, you’re not a ‘culture fit’ either.” Plan your exit.
- “The timing just isn’t good right now.” Excellent question to ask yourself: “Did they specify why timing isn’t good? If yes, then it’s true. If not, they’re buying time to think of a better way to say no.” I agree it’s likely “they’re hoping you’ll stop bringing it up.
- “I need you to be patient for <promotion or raise>.” I agree “[i]f it’s promotion season (or it just passed), they’re giving you the runaround… Either they don’t know how to advocate for you — or don’t want to. Leave ASAP.”
Workers have more leverage than any other period of time. Firms are fighting to keep associates by raising pay, and companies are poaching associates. (See this Corporate Counsel article on hiring war for top talent between firms and companies. See here on legal talent shortage and here on on corporate activity fueling “exceptional demand” of lawyers.) If your manager is denigrating you instead of appreciating you and growing you, take advantage of the market. Only you are in charge of your career.
