How to Leave on Good Terms
- On May 23, 2021
It’s peak hiring season now! My candidates are getting offers and saying good-bye to current employers. Three things departing employees should do to leave on good terms:
- Give two weeks’ notice. Yes, two weeks is an arbitrary number, but it is convention. Be flexible about staying a little longer if your employer asks you to. Staying an extra two or three weeks can make all the difference to them (obviously don’t if they are taking advantage of you!). Negotiate in consulting if it’s needed, and clear that with your future employer if there’s overlap between jobs.
- Tell your manager in-person or by video conference, phone if necessary. I don’t recommend you give notice by email or text.
- Think about your colleagues. Who is impacted by your departure? Suggest a transition plan to your manager. Note current status and upcoming milestones. Identify key business partners/roles.
