When Networking is NOT the Answer

I know one piece of career advice you’ve heard is to network constantly. Here’s when it’s not a good idea: You don’t know what you want yet. It’s ok to brainstorm with close friends, but beyond that inner circle, give some thought to what you are asking first. People can give guidance and refer you to opportunities only if you explain what you are looking for. Also, people will not pass you on to their broader network if you are not presenting yourself well.

Get a sense of the market, who the players are, and the types of jobs out there before you start asking questions. That research will ensure a more meaningful discussion, help people think of things for you, and not let them feel like they are wasting their time. And if you sufficiently impress them, they will refer you on and keep you in mind.
