How to Ask for More Money: 3 Things to Consider When Receiving Offer
- On February 2, 2020
If you are about to get an offer, congratulations! You thought the hard part was over? Now you should negotiate your salary. It’s expected (if you ask nicely), and worth a shot. Some key things to keep in mind:
- What is market for this role? Ask your friends, law school classmates, etc. But if you find that all too awkward, consider online compensation resources here.
- What are the employer’s salary parameters? Each company has a band in mind for you. It’s fair to ask what that band is, and make an argument on why you should be on the high end of that band or part of the next one (if you have the evidence for it). Another thing to feel out with employers is where they have flexibility: base, bonus, or equity. Each company is different, so it’s good to ask. (The one caveat is if the company has a history of making one compelling best and final offer, in which case, you might not want to engage in negotiating to avoid starting the relationship on a bad note.)
- Share numbers of a competing offer. That is often the quickest way to get you adjusted. But always explain how you are more interested in their company to make sure the hiring manager and HR go to bat for you.
