#1 Way to Set Yourself Apart in Interview
- On January 18, 2019
I agree with this Amazon HR exec who said the best way to set yourself apart from other interviewees is to do your homework: “It’s immediately obvious when a candidate hasn’t taken the time to truly learn about the company, and that candidates who are looking to stand out should go a step further.”
Learn about the company’s culture and key wins, and then find examples within your own experience that the employer would care about. Ideally these examples are something you are passionate about yourself so you can show “a level of connection to the job, the opportunity and the team.” Companies even in the same industry will have different priorities and values, so choose your stories accordingly. While one company could emphasize its customers, others could prioritize creativity, accelerated growth, or diversity & inclusion.
The majority of your research may not come up in the course of the interview, but you will feel more confident and be able to cherry pick the key things to talk about.
