Should You Interview Even if You Think Comp Will Be Too Low?

Attorneys always tell me they don’t want to “waste anyone’s time”, but it may be worthwhile to talk to a prospective employer even if you suspect compensation is less than ideal in these situations:
- The company is interesting. If you’ve heard good things about the management or it’s in a hot field, then it’s definitely worth talking. At a minimum, you will find out more about what the company is up to and how the industry is moving.
- You want to meet key players and build connections in this space. If you are personable and straightforward, you will not anger these new connections if you in fact have to withdraw from consideration later. (Obviously don’t say you will take the job when you won’t! But employers are understanding if you turn down a job because you are getting paid more elsewhere or if you give solid reasons respectfully.)
- The company might move on comp after they get to know you. I frequently see companies increase base, bonus, and/or equity for the right candidate AFTER they fall in love. And I’ve seen good candidates take themselves out of the running too early when they set rigid comp levels upfront that the company later meets with others.
