How to Ask for a Raise
- On May 31, 2015
You want to be paid your worth, but it’s tough to have to ask for it. Some things to try:
- Timing. Consider when budgets are set for the following year. Set aside time to talk to your manager 3-4 months before the annual review so you get your request in before numbers are frozen.
- Make your case from your “I love me file.” Prepare numbers justifying your raise. List your responsibilities and achievements from the prior year. Yes, it is hard to remember off the top of your head, which is why you should be emailing accolades and accomplishments to a special file throughout the year for this very purpose.
- Research. Find out what others are paid for a similar role in the same industry and location. You can look on the Internet for general guidance, but networking and talking to recruiting professionals will probably pay off best.
- Gentle approach. Talk to your manager gently, with statistics and without threats. Managers who give raises under duress may hold it against you later. If you get a no, just ask what can be done to earn a raise.
