3 Things You Must Do to Land an Interview
- On August 26, 2017
Get ready for fall recruiting season! Start strategizing how to land interviews. To save you time, I am distilling the comprehensive post What No One Tells You About Landing an Interview into 3 short points:
- Show you are a good fit with the prospective employer through your tailored resume. Well-known brands like great clients you’ve represented, top schools you’ve attended, and firms you’ve worked for should jump out to the reader. Your resume should also highlight relevant experience the employer would care about. Show you know you understand the job at hand by addressing its hot topics and using its key words.
- Get a decision-maker to review your resume. Well before you start applying for any job, you should be expanding your network and getting to know important players in the areas you are interested in. That way, when a job opens up, get referred by someone the manager trusts, which pretty much guarantees an interview.
- Maximize your luck by pursuing multiple opportunities. I find that candidates who go after opportunities sequentially often run out of time because recruiting seasons have short windows (typically September to November, and March to May). Candidates who talk to multiple employers also gain more leverage when negotiating timing and compensation.
