3 Easy and Effective Job Search Tips
- On February 7, 2016
If you’re looking for a job, you’ve probably been inundated by unhelpful advice that’s hard to implement. For example, I still haven’t opened the books What Color is Your Parachute and What Can You Do with a Law Degree.
Instead, below are 3 high-impact and easy things to do for your job search. You already tell stories in your every day life, have a resume, and are on LinkedIn. These tweaks will make a big difference:
- Curate your stories. We all tell the same stories over and over (I’m sure your spouse or best friend will agree). Start gathering and refining stories that illustrate something about you that is helpful for an employer or client to remember, like how you were a zealous advocate for a client in a tough situation, or how you were inspired by your immigrant parents and have achieved the American dream. Stop being boring, which will never get you the job!
- Update and tailor your resume. Replace weak verbs in your resume with active ones. I hate the word “handled” (why do lawyers love this one?). How about “manage”, “led”, or “ran”? And include the successful outcome in the resume too.
- Use LinkedIn so it’s helpful for employers and recruiters to find and evaluate you. Chances are you have a basic profile. Now do more! Include a good picture and an easy to read chronology of where you worked and what you did. Make sure your LinkedIn presence matches your resume and any in-person presentations. Have a friend review for typos and your marketing.
