Should I Stay or Should I Go? 4 Factors to Consider.
- On June 19, 2017
Summer is the perfect time to think about your career during the lull in recruiting. When deciding whether to stay or go, 4 factors to consider:
- Prioritize what you need. Is it compensation, stability, flexibility, a broader (or deeper) skill set, or dynamic culture? And what is your risk tolerance? You cannot have it all, but know what is most important to you, and evaluate where you can get this mix.
- Compare scenarios. Think about likely best case and worst case scenarios for where you are and where you’re considering, and see what outcome you can live with most (or would kick yourself most if you missed out). For example, you might to want to try a risky startup with a great board and well-known CEO because even in the worst case scenario of company failure, you will have made connections to leave you in good shape, and future employers will understand why you tried that company.
- Consider what you can still achieve at your current employer. Is your company growing so new opportunities will arise for you? Are you gaining a marketable skill set?
- Evaluate your career objectively. Can someone looking at your resume see why you moved without your having to explain? That question can help you decide whether the next opportunity makes sense
