5 Tips for Women (or Anyone!) to Succeed at Work
- On June 25, 2017
Silicon Valley can be a tough place for women. I recently spoke to two diverse senior women lawyers, and even though one works at a startup and the other a Fortune 100, their tips on navigating the workplace overlapped (and apply to everyone!):
- Foster mentors and allies. Build relationships with everyone so people can get to know you as an individual and not simply as that minority or that woman. People you impress can get you in the room for important discussions you might otherwise be shut out of. Once in the room, they can back you as someone whose advice is sound and worthy of consideration.
- Find opportunities to add value. Give sound, pragmatic advice.
- Take calculated risks. For example, advocate for a position if you feel strongly about it even if you are not specifically asked. (In that scenario, do consider the best way to do it. You don’t have to raise your voice, but make good points.)
- Be confident and approachable. Even if you are competent, you can be shut out if you are not approachable.
- Find support outside of your company. You can find them in attorney women’s networks and diversity groups, for example, which can provide great support and places to network.
