5 Things Smart Lawyers Always Do for Their Career.
- On May 29, 2018
Lawyers are often so goal-oriented they focus on achieving results for their clients but not for themselves. Here are 5 things smart lawyers should always do for themselves:
- Have a current resume handy. Even if you love your job, you never know when an even more amazing employer wants to talk. I’ve seen good candidates fall by the wayside because they didn’t have a resume ready.
- Track achievements. Start an I Love Me file, and forward any emails of gratitude from clients and stats of impressive wins to it throughout the year. That way you have metrics to refresh your resume each year and to support the dreaded self-evaluation (or requests for promotions/raises).
- Know the current market. How much should you get paid? Take the recruiter call to find out the general comp range and key duties. Also, share salary information among friends. Use online tools too.
- Broaden and/or deepen your skill set. Pick up adjacent subject matters (e.g., if you’re in tech trans, pick up data privacy; if you’re in litigation, pick up product work; if you’re in patents, pick up patent licensing, etc.).
- Get known for your work. Speak on panels, attend roundtables. That way people will think of you as an expert and come to you.
