5 Things Your Interviewer Is Evaluating You On
- On November 23, 2013
- Do you have the right skills to do the job? Read the job description for the requisite skills. Learn everything you can about the interviewer, and consider what he/she cares about. Then tailor and practice your pitch, which should include the top 3 things you have identified to get across.
- Do you show passion for the job and industry? You need to say you are interested and articulate why.
- Is there a chance you might not stick around? Do you come across as only wanting this job as a stepping stone? Do you say you are looking for things that are not in this job description? If so, you could be dinged for being a short timer interested only in furthering your own career, or wanting your manager’s job.
- Will you fit in culturally? Do your homework and find out what the company AND legal team pride themselves on, e.g., passion, concern about privacy or IP, collegiality, etc. Tailor your pitch accordingly.
- Are you adaptable? You may show you can do the job as written now, but what if things change? Do you have examples showing that you can deal with curveballs, learn technology quickly, and speak truth to power? Consider where the company is in the marketplace and where you think the company will be going.
