5 Things Fortune 500 CLO Looks For When Hiring & Promoting

I recently had the chance to speak to the CLO of a Fortune 500 in Silicon Valley about hiring and promoting. Here are the top 5 traits candidates and employees are assessed on:
- Intelligence. Does the person have the aptitude and raw intelligence to do a great job?
- Attitude. Is the person a self-starter, someone who is proactive, organized, and passionate? The ideal is someone who keeps thinking about an issue even after pressing the “send” button.
- Indicia of success. Strong candidates have a record of advancement and increasing responsibilities. They ideally have rotated through different roles (if a prior employer allowed for that).
- Preparation. Is the person obviously prepared at the interview?
- Insight. Does the candidate offer insight about the company or role? During interviews, does he or she know what are the challenges business or legal faces?
