5 Painless Ways to Network
- On August 15, 2016
Networking is no one’s idea of fun, but here are 5 things you can easily do without feeling like a fake:
- Write an article or post on an interesting development in your area of expertise. It doesn’t have to go into a client alert or formal publication. You can post it on LinkedIn, for example, and get good traction.
- Attend an alumni event. You already have something in common so you won’t have to rack your brains on small talk.
- Help plan an event. People who hate networking often feel uncomfortable when they don’t have a defined role. If you plan an event, choose something you have an inherent interest in. At the event, you will have clear purpose, and you won’t feel pressured to make small talk.
- Read the paper (or posts), and congratulate people electronically on their accomplishments. Yes, it’s that simple.
- Notice what people are good at, and tell them. For example, panelists after talks are besieged by anxious people looking for guidance. If you instead approach speakers with a heartfelt and specific compliment, they will remember you (then be sure to follow up to keep the connection going).
