3 Interview Questions Suggested by TikTok That Work (& 2 More That Do Not)
- On February 25, 2024
Yes I’m still watching TikTok videos for you and summarizing anything good. I thought the 3 questions to ask in a job interview by former corporate hiring manager/career coach Darci Smith were on point. She got these questions by asking hiring managers what they like to be asked about and is based in the Bay Area.
- Ask a question about the hiring manager’s current project. The sample question given is “What project is the team currently working on and how can I make an impact?” I would tweak that since you should have researched what the hiring manager is working on. Consider saying something like “I read that X launched with Y results. That’s so great. What did you think of [something about X/Y].” Choose something positive to talk about. Hold tough questions until you have leverage like when you have offer in hand.
- Ask why the person joined the company. You can cite LinkedIn and ask about the decision process to join the company. I like this question because it shows interest in the person and the company and makes clear you prepared for the interview without being awkward. Research on LinkedIn is pretty standard and is not considered creepy.
- Ask a question about something discussed in the interview. Yes. That shows you were paying attention and makes the interview flow, the best kind of interview. (Trust me, the interviewer also does not like choppy, uncomfortable interviews.)
And below are two questions I’ve often seen suggested on the Internet but I think you should avoid:
- Tell me what success looks like.
- Is there anything that’s an obstacle to hiring me?
Both sound canned and awkward. They might work for a business job but not in-house legal. Remember: it is on you to make the interview work!
