2 Things to Do Right Now if You Haven’t Been Networking But Need a Job
- On June 2, 2024
You may be the type who puts your head down and focuses exclusively on work, not networking. Then you may suddenly need a job now and hear “you should have maintained relationships along the way.” Since that type of advice isn’t super helpful but you are told getting a job at your level in this market requires knowing someone on the inside, what can you do right now?
- If you were MIA/not networking for many years, hopefully it’s because you have been doing outstanding work for clients, partners, and colleagues. Use that investment to your benefit by re-engaging with everyone you have helped. (And do it gently: show how you can help them, and never start with an ask.) Legal colleagues are a great first step to reach out to. But also think about people you helped in Sales, Finance, Engineering, Compliance, etc. If you solved a problem before for them, they know you can solve similar problems they currently face, and they can be your best advocate to get you an interview.
- Identify thought leaders in your space — they usually see trends and are consulted about openings. Make yourself known to them, e.g., at a conference ask them great questions, or offer help with research or organizing next events. Also, interact with them on social media so they know your name. Go beyond simply liking their posts by implementing their suggestions and giving feedback. When leaders see you know your stuff and can help them, they will be more receptive to helping you.
The takeaway: you can always start building relationships. People respect authenticity and efficiency (no one wants a drag on their time), so if you can show you are easy to work with and will help them, they will want to help you!
